The film 17000" by Harry Koushos is a hybrid sci-fi narrative that uses filmic, dance and fine art codes to negotiate the human oscillation between desire and the instinct of survival.
Situated in a vague but dystopic future, where human life is possible only in predetermined Gardens and Zones, the work constructs an ambivalent, Tarkovskian universe in order to focus on the ever-suffocating conditions of incarceration, surveillance and compliance of bodies.
If seventeen thousand seconds is the time one can live without oxygen, what is the time needed for a body to yield to the disorder of desire, the insubordination of the collective warmth, the transgression of boundaries?
Speech, sound and movement blend within dark, closed cinematic frames in Kushos’s work, and finally tend towards the fugitive choice of self-determination realized by Female I.
