“It is hard for a free fish to understand what is happening to a hooked one.” Karl A. Menninger
With Hooked, Elias Lazaridis in collaboration with Compagnia Eleina D. considers how this lack of perception of an alternative life condition may be a key characteristic of contemporary society. As we are all connected to a virtual network of information sharing, feedback and gratification, it becomes difficult to imagine one’s life out of the dominant virtual or conceptual structures.
This dance work explores, through a series of choreographic sketches, the strains imposed on society by the living environment and the inevitable frictions that occur when sentience surpasses sapience. When networks created become net(work)s we need to escape from, the struggle between belonging and being independent is prolonged in perpetuum, and we are hooked oblivious of this fact.
