The Garden of the Beasts
When does unrest become rage, mad violence? What are the circumstances that transform a condition of social harmony into a situation of bestial savagery? Was the Garden of Eden ever a place of innocence, or does it only exist as a conceptual construct, an origin myth to help us cope with the violence of the human species?
The performance The Garden of the Beasts examines the current state of the world, where violence, wars and hatred have shaped an inhuman society. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s silent films, two dancers portray a constantly shifting dynamic, expressing endless accusations and the shifting of blame. They confront each other, continuously defending themselves in a world full of destruction and conflict.
Through this surreal approach, the work seeks the root cause behind the distortion of humanity’s moral values and the deformation of social relationships. The performance raises the question of whether the root of evil and decay has existed since the beginning of human existence. At its core, the work highlights society’s inability to take responsibility and the endless tendency to blame others, avoiding our own participation in the crisis.
The work has been presented at Auf dem Sprung Festival (DEU).
