BLACK
The meaning of rupture for Black life rests mainly with the foundational violence of the transatlantic slave trade that transformed human beings into strangers, into property. Emancipation has never been a clean break, but it can/has involve/d forms of refusal that present a rupture with order. If the threat of death defines the lived experience of Blackness, then the possibility of escape is a matter of calling on the past and the future alike. There is love and joy in this, and Black is a work that, through the dance of one, summons the strength of the assembly, the joy of the chorus, the love of the streets.

Black Is a reflection on the violence and emancipation of Blackness in today’s world, through a body that challenges and disturbs, a body that is both wounded and celebrated.

Using a set devoid of artifice and brimming with symbolism, choreographer and performer Oulouy hints at recent history, such as the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the murder of George Floyd, to rethink the Black African body in the Western world.

Black is a dance, a visual and musical chronicle, narrated through street dance styles of the African continent and its diaspora in the USA, such as Coupé-décalé, Ndomboló, Afrohouse, or Krump.

The work has been presented in many theatres and festivals, including: fabrik Potsdam, Dampfzentrale (Bern), Purple Tanzfestival (Berlin), La Mèche Courte (Montreal), Kournos Music Festival (Lemnos), Staatstheater Darmstadt, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm (Frankfurt), “On Marche” (Marrakesh), Fari Foni Waati (Bamako), JOMBA! (Durban), Théâtre Sévelin 36 (Lausanne), Derida Dance Center (Sofia), The National Center for Dance Bucharest, Cádiz en Danza, Dansa Metropolitana and Festival Grec (Barcelona).

The work was selected by Aerowaves in 2025
