Philosopher Vinciane Despret, in her book Our Grateful Dead: Stories of Those Left Behind, refuses the work of mourning as a prescription and invites us to think beyond the act of inscribing the dead into the realm of memory. The dead are dead if we stop engaging with them. They can continue otherwise, and there is a form of instauration on our behalf if this “more” existence is to be realized for them. AFTER ALL is a work that challenges both “after” and “all” by engaging with our sense of the end, the paradox of accepting it and by doing so overcoming it.

AFTER ALL is a show about death. It is a celebration of our vulnerable and courageous existence, using dance, theatre, storytelling and comedy, to ask: How do we deal with the end?

By exploring various funeral rites — ones we have, ones we have lost, and those yet to be invented — choreographer Solène Weinachter confronts our transition between worlds head-on.

AFTER ALL is a hopeful attempt to conjure a better sort of space for us to be with loss and collectively contemplate the finite nature of our lives.

The work premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2023 and has since toured nationally and internationally across the UK, Europe and Asia, including a recent sold-out run at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.

With the support of the French Institute in Serbia and Teatroskop, a program initiated by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Culture, and Institut français Paris.

The work was selected by Aerowaves in 2025
